Bay of Beaches

There is something cosy about a bay and yet it can have an huge ampitheartre effect especially when there are big skies to be looked at. Objects on the other side of the bay look far away but once you start walking you are there in no time at all! Up for auction now!

Grey beach

The first of a series of grey-day beach paintings.
There is something exhilirating about walking a beach with a threatening sky in the distance. There seems to be an uninterupted connection between the sky, the sea and those who wade the beach. It's as if we can in some way be connected with the storm and yet feel the safety of the distance from it.

Sometimes we don't want a full plunge into the sea and rolling up pants and taking off shoes and socks does the trick. As for dogs, generally they will go in fearless of any thought of the coldness of the water specially if there is a tennis ball to chase!

They call Adelaide the city of churches, but there are more church steeples in Melbourne than you can poke a candlestick at! Beach for dogs

Have you ever noticed how dogs just love the beach - most of the time much more than their owners seem to! Even in the winter months dogs don't seem to mind the cold water and will plough into the waves after a tennis ball just for the enjoyment of it. Personally, I love the reflections of dogs and their owners in the shallows.

Blue Shallow Beach

I love to experiment with clouds and reflections in a beachscape. The clouds are brushed in freely with no regard for the small brush - this keeps them 'cloud-like' and uncontrived. The beach and sea are painted the same way. It takes a lot of practice (hundreds of paintings) to be confident in painting this way. Finally the figures are painted in with a small brush - this needs the utmost confidence for them to look right with the rest of the painting.

This was painted Plein Air from the Bluff-end of Encounter Bay on a cold winter morning. Small fishing boats quietly made their way out to favourite fishing spots as I painted my favourite location.

Granite Island from the Bluff

 

It was a cold winter morning when I painted this little piece and it is one of my favourites. The sun was low and facing me, that in turn produces its own colours in a landscape. The subdued colours have given this  painting a good representation of the atmosphere of the day.
