Summer Beach

Although this painting is titled 'Summer Beach', no sand is visible. It's safe to assume that it's there seeing that the people in the sea are standing up in the shallows - so, the beach is not to far away. Sometime you just have to get your feet wet to get some relief from the heat.
This is the 5th of 7 paitnings this week that will up for auction.

Three on Blue Beach

Number three in the Blue Beach exercise series - with a great point of difference of the figures being on the left-hand side of the painting!
As in all these exercise paintings, it is all about free brushwork - not going back to often to fix things up. It truly is great to sharpen up the skills.

Dog on Blue Beach

This is the second of my exercise pieces in which I limit my time to 20 minutes tops. What would a beach be without walkers and dogs - particularly in the winter!

Blue beach

This is the first of my exercise pieces in which I limit my time to 20 minutes tops. Putting a limit on the time stops fiddling and keeps the painting fresh. Being less careful with figures and dogs on the beach can really help technique too. The figures in a painting like this are painted with just a few strokes, the more you do of these the better they will look. If the rest of the painting is nice and loose and brushy then figures should be too - it's no time to be putting on buttons! The imagination of the viewer takes over were the brush leaves off - its the right combination to make a painting interesting.

Sunset towards Seacliff

As you can see, I was racing against time with this painting as the end of the day drew near, although I did get another three done before the curtains of night were drawn over the sea. This will be a familiar scene to those who frequent the sounhern metropolitan beaches. It looks toward Seacliff and was painted from the esplanade that stretches from Seacliff to Brighton. As chilly as it was, there are always those who walk their dogs or just walk themselves of course.

Sunset on Aldinga Beach

There are still a few late-stayers on Aldinga Beach. Some cars are leaving via the ramp to the road while people and their dogs are still patrolling the shore. An artist is just about to pack up his things too!

Aldinga beach-dog

What is it with dogs!
Some dogs will calmly walk next to their owners at the beach, others are so excited to see other dogs on a walk and will quickly make friends. Other dogs just love to chase a ball into the freezing winter sea. What they all have in common though, is that every dog I have seen at the beach, just loves it!
The painting was done on-site late in the afternoon.

Late afternoon Aldinga Beach

Aldinga Beach is one of those rare beaches you can drive your car on, so it was a good base to be doing some plein air painting from. It was late in the day and shadows were getting long as the beach gradually became emptier of cars and people.

Late afternoon Goolwa yachts

The day's sailing was almost over at Goolwa, but one yacht was taking advantage of a stiff breeze before the sun sets. The painting was done Plein Air in very cold conditions!

Beach walkers

A plein air painting of the beach between Largs and Semaphore where many a walker and their dogs are found. On the horizon, heavy cargo vessels are slowly making their way out of the gulf.

Semaphore beach walkers

A plein air painting of the walkway that runs from Largs to Semphore. Actually it is a shared bikeway too and perhaps I should add dogs too! In the background is the iconic and rejuvinated Palais Hotel.
