The road to Seacliff

The road into Seacliff in South Australia is rather steep, but presents an amazing view of the beach and sea.
This day shadows were being cast on the sea and the white sails of racing boats really stood out. Beyond the shadows the sea shone in turquoise.

After the race - Seacliff

I just happened to be at the right place at the right time at Seacliff today. It was one of those days were the sun was popping in and out of the clouds which produces a patchwork of shadows across the sea and beach. Boats started to come in after the race and started to pack in for the day on the beach. It was an inviting sight that begged to be painted. This is the first of the series of Seacliff.

Yachts and beach

Yachts add so much to a beach scene. The white sales that dazzle in the sunlight contrast with the blue-green of the sea and the blue of the sky.

Bay of Beaches

Bay of Beaches - acrylic on canvas - 30x14cm
The second in the series of this size painting, it depicts a bay with seemingly unending beaches. There is something cosy about a bay and yet it can have an huge ampitheartre effect especially when there are big skies to be looked at. Objects on the other side of the bay look far away but once you start walking you are there in no time at all!

First in the series of this size painting, it depicts an expansive view of wide shallows and the sea beyond. Beachgoers walk in the shallows and enjoy late afternoon conditions including a magnificent show of clouds on the horizon.

Grey beach

The first of a series of grey-day beach paintings.
There is something exhilirating about walking a beach with a threatening sky in the distance. There seems to be an uninterupted connection between the sky, the sea and those who wade the beach. It's as if we can in some way be connected with the storm and yet feel the safety of the distance from it.

Sometimes we don't want a full plunge into the sea and rolling up pants and taking off shoes and socks does the trick. As for dogs, generally they will go in fearless of any thought of the coldness of the water specially if there is a tennis ball to chase!

Top end of Brunswick Street Melbourne

They call Adelaide the city of churches, but there are more church steeples in Melbourne than you can poke a candlestick at! There are parts of Melbourne that you would not be suprised to see the gas street lights being lit for the night. Brunswick Street is one of those places. It has an alluring mixture of up-to-the-minute fashion and an oldness that would have you expecting Oliver Twist to come dashing out of a shop front.

Beach for dogs

Have you ever noticed how dogs just love the beach - most of the time much more than their owners seem to! Even in the winter months dogs don't seem to mind the cold water and will plough into the waves after a tennis ball just for the enjoyment of it. Personally, I love the reflections of dogs and their owners in the shallows.

Blue Shallow Beach

I love to experiment with clouds and reflections in a beachscape. The clouds are brushed in freely with no regard for the small brush - this keeps them 'cloud-like' and uncontrived. The beach and sea are painted the same way. It takes a lot of practice (hundreds of paintings) to be confident in painting this way. Finally the figures are painted in with a small brush - this needs the utmost confidence for them to look right with the rest of the painting.
This painting is up for Auction with a very low starting price and no reserve!

Granite Island from the Bluff

It was a cold winter morning when I painted this little piece and it is one of my favourites. The sun was low and facing me, that in turn produces its own colours in a landscape. The subdued colours have given this  painting a good representation of the atmosphere of the day.

Seal Island Victor Harbor

When I painted this a couple of months ago, it was cold, windy and I was wearing my plein air gloves - ones with no fingertips on them - they are great! This was painted from the Bluff area looking behind Granite Island.
I loved the clouds on this day. Winter clouds have a feel that is rarely seen in the warmer months, they are cold and often very dramtic - clouds you just have to watch!

Slice of cockle beach 2

A while ago I had a studio clean-up that entailed throwing away what I considered despensible and slicing up some larger pieces which in themselves made better paintings than the original-sized ones.
This is slice is up for auction with a low start price. It was originally a very large piece that focused on the view toward Middleton from Goolwa. It was a grey misty day but was alive with cocklers with a focus on these two in particular.
It's a lovely moody piece that will frame up beautifully under glass and matting.

Lighthouse Point

The scene is entirely ficticious as are most of my auction pieces but there are hints of real places in the painting. Beachwalkers and their dogs enjoy the sorroundings and the comfort of the place as they trawl along the shore.

Views of Granite Island

Anyone who is familiar with Victor Harbor knows all about Granite Island. You can walk across the long footbridge or pay for a ride on one of the horse-drawn vehicles that plods their way across to the island. To have been to Victor almost always means you've been over to the Island. This view is from Encounter Bay, from where I painted this work in Plein Air and finished off in the studio.
Victor Harbor is one of the world's best kept secrets!
