Lighthouse Point

The scene is entirely ficticious as are most of my auction pieces but there are hints of real places in the painting. There is a feeling of safety with the lighthouse standing aloft at the end of the esplanade. Beachwalkers and their dogs enjoy the sorroundings and the comfort of the place as they trawl along the shore.

Views of Granite Island

Anyone who is familiar with Victor Harbor knows all about Granite Island. You can walk across the long footbridge or pay for a ride on one of the horse-drawn vehicles that plods their way across to the island. To have been to Victor almost always means you've been over to the Island. This view is from Encounter Bay, from where I painted this work in Plein Air and finished off in the studio.

Spring's hope at the beach

Today I gave myself some much needed therapy and set myself up outside to paint. The winter sun gave just enough heat to be enjoyable without being hot and it was just wonderful to paint again. I threw caution to the wind and put together a few little study paintings that I will put up for auction. They are of no place in particular, but hopefully give the impression that the hope of Spring is just around the corner and that we can wave goodbye to this cold Winter!

The last for a litte while...

Due to a nagging little health problem this painting of Port Willunga will be the last of my daily paintings for about 3 weeks.  I'll be back on deck then hopefully, with a new batch of stuff!

Port Willunga from above

I found a quiet spot at the Blackwood Rotary Art Show to put together a couple of small demonstration works from photos taken at Port Willunga a few weeks back. It was the end of the day and the shadows were getting long on the beach. Dog walkers and fishermen were coming out in force!

Day of waves

A view from the vantage point of the sandhills sees, groups of people play in the shallows as the sound of the continuous waves echo like applause along the vast bay. It's a familar sight at Goolwa Beach.

Starting tomorrow - More small works that feature Port Willunga, Victor Harbor and Goolwa River.

Goolwa surfer

I've never seen Goolwa Beach without a surf. Some days are calmer than others, but no surf at all is not an option it seems. Even on the lower scale of body-boarding I have watched my own teenager ride a wave a good 50 metres right up to the beach. Goolwa Beach has such wide shallows and it's reflections are second to none.

Sunspot Goolwa Beach

After of plenty of rain the bottom part of the Goolwa sandhills can look rather lush and when a sunspot hits in it can look like a well-kept putting green - from a distance that is! Sunspots along a shaded beach looks quite spectacular particularly when it is dotted with beach people too.

Rainstorm Goolwa Beach

Goolwa Beach is rarely seen withouth some visual drama. This day a rain storm hung lazily out to sea but always looked like it may threaten the beach at any time! Cocklers are unphased by the storm and dig their toes and fingers into the wet sand for their quota of cockles.

Shadows on Goolwa Beach

Goolwa Beach is indeed my favourite. Long shallows, a constant ocean swell and a beach haze that can look etherial are some of its attractions. In the summer it can be full of people enjoying the sun and surf and in the cooler months it is frequented by walkers and cocklers. On this day the sun cast its playful shadows along the beach and sandhills.

Brighton sunset

The day was almost done when I painted this and it was getting cold along the esplanade between Brighton and Seacliff. Dogs and their walkers seemed relentless against both time and darkness!

Granite Island - Victor Harbor

Of all the places in and around Victor Harbor, Granite Island is on of the must-sees. The walk across the bridge is a highlight in itself with great views of the sorrounding areas. Then, if you are up to it you can do the walk around the island or just walk up to the kiosk/restaraunt for refreshments. If you really feel like doing it in style you can ride all the way on the horse-drawn carraige at take in some extra views from the vantage point of the open top deck.

Victor Harbor magic

There are some beautiful vantage points to paint from at Victor Harbor and this was one of them. Even though it was quite chilly it was sheltered from the wind. This vew is looking toward Victor Harbor from Encounter Bay. The bridge to Granite Island can be seen in the background. I was pleased the way this one came together.

Port Willunga from the beach

The end of a windy day at Port Willunga comes to an end with a rush of beach-walkers and keen fishermen. the cliffs become a vivid orange in the sunset and my photos look like they have been doctored because the colour was so bright.
The Star of Greece cafe that overlooks the beach is about to come to life with its Saturday night customers - some of them have been going there for years - but they all know it's one of Adelaide's best kept secrets!

Late afternoon Port Willunga

It was too windy to paint on this day a couple of weeks ago. The easel was resonating in the wind and no lines of any substance could be put on the canvas - so, photos was the order of the afternoon.

Late afternoon Thames

This second study piece for a larger work is based on a photo by renowned photographer Mark
Zinzag from his London series. I have arranged with Mark to be able to use his photographs in this way for a series of paintings on London. The photo 'A view across the Thames' is taken late in the day from the Waterloo Bridge and looks toward the Blackfriars Bridge. It has a certain romantic quality about the photo that I have enhanced with lots of artistic license!

Reflection Beach

The best thing I like about a beach is its shallows. It's here that reflections come into their own. Some beaches have very wide shallows - Goolwa beach in South Australia is a case in point.

Lots to see in this one as quite a number of people are in the shallows of blue-green. Lots of luscious brushstrokes too.
